What is an SSL certificate?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a technology that creates an encrypted connection between a web server and a web browser. HTTPS is used as the transfer protocol instead of HTTP when accessing a web server using SSL. An SSL certificate is a digital certificate installed on a web server that authenticates the identity of the web server, such that the information (username and password) sent from your visitors to the web server can only be seen by the web server.

A trusted SSL certificate is issued by a valid Certificate Authority (CA), which ensures the recipient of a certificate is the domain owner. When a web browser connects to a web server, it will verify that the domain name of the web server matches the SSL certificate provided by the web server, and also check if the SSL certificate can be trusted. It will display warnings to users if the verification fails.
